Nina Wang

Nina Wang (née Kung) or Kung Yu Sum (Chinese: 龔如心, pinyin: Gŏng Rúxīn) (September 29, 1937 – April 3, 2007) was Asia's richest woman, with an estimated net worth of $4,200,000,000. Wang was the widow of Hong Kong chemical magnate Teddy Wang (Wang The Huei, 王德輝), who disappeared in 1990 after a kidnapping.

Kung Yu Sum was born in Shanghai, where she was a childhood playmate of Teddy Wang, the son of Wang Din-shin, who had established a paint and chemical business. The Wangs moved to Hong Kong, and the business became the Chinachem Group, eventually one of Hong Kong's largest and most powerful companies based on a lucrative pharmaceutical division. In 1948, when she was 11 and he 15, they renewed their friendship, and in 1955 they married.

Nicknamed "Little Sweet Sweet" ("Siu Tim Tim" or "小甜甜" in Cantonese), she was noted for her two pigtails and her love of dressing in traditional Chinese dresses.

She was the richest woman in Asia and Asia's 35th richest person, with a fortune of $4.2bn, according to Forbes magazine... a fortune exceeding that of the Queen of England.

On April 12, 1983, the Wangs' Mercedes was hijacked. Teddy Wang was taken away and chained to a bed for eight days until Nina Wang paid an $11 million ransom. On April 10, 1990, Teddy Wang was kidnapped again. After his disappearance, Nina took the helm of Chinachem under the title of "Chairlady" and built it into a major property developer.

Teddy Wang was declared dead in 1999, although his body was never found, the battle over the late Teddy's fortune began in earnest, with at least 3 different wills circulating in the court system. The earliest will, the authenticity of which is not contested, was dated 1960 and split the estate equally between Teddy's father Wang Din-shin and Nina. A 1968 version produced by Din-shin gave the entire estate to Din-shin. This will was made after Teddy discovered that his wife was having an affair with Dallas based business man Tony Dimirack. A 1990 will (dated a month before Teddy's abduction) ceded the entire estate to Nina and included the phrase "one life, one love", in English, with the rest of the will in Chinese, stating that the Wang family is disappointing. This will had a signature indicating it was witnessed by the family butler.

On November 21, 2002, after a 171-day courtroom battle featuring some of Hong Kong's most prominent lawyers and accusations of adultery on the part of Nina Wang by Wang Din-shin, High Court Justice David Yam declared the 1990 will a forgery and awarded all of Teddy Wang's estimated $128 million estate to Wang Din-shin. She appealed against the ruling but lost in a 2-1 decision on June 28, 2004. The money was handed over to Wang Din-shin. On January 28, 2005, she was formally charged with the forgery and freed on bail.

On September 16, 2005, the Court of Final Appeal overturned the previous High Court ruling, giving control of the multi-billion dollar Chinachem firm back to Mrs Wang. On December 2, 2005, prosecutors in the fraud case officially dropped all charges, effectively exonerating Wang.

On April 4, 2007, Chinachem announced that Wang passed away at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital the previous day. Although the cause of death has not been disclosed, there have been reports suggesting that she might have been suffering from ovarian cancer.

Wang had no children but is survived by at least one brother and two sisters. It is revealed that her hereditary will be split in three ways. The first portion to her family including her old mother, and the three siblings. The second portion will be used to establish a trust fund for the management of Chinachemp Group, under the supervision of her sister Kung Yan Sum and two other unnamed employees. The final and largest portion of the billions will be given to China as a charity fund for economic developments.

HBO's The Wire "New Season" Debuts Tonight

I've never watched an episode of The Wire. I'm not sure why. I get HBO, and I'm not sure what I watch at 10pm on Sundays but tonight I am going to sit down and partake in the first episode of the new season of The Wire.

Here is to hoping that I can jump in and figure out what is going on right away. In other words, I hope that the show is not a continuance of previous episodes. It has been 16 months since a new episode has been shown on TV so hopefully I can just jump in the middle of the show.

So, what is the Wire?

The 2004 Peabody Award-winning HBO drama series THE WIRE concluded its 12-episode third season in December. The 12-episode fourth season will begin shooting in late 2005, with debut set for 2006.

Season three of THE WIRE examined the concept and nature of reform and the role of the political leadership in addressing a city's problems. Earlier themes included the death of the American working class, depicted in season two, and the inherent conflict between individuals and the modern institutions to which they are beholden, as seen in the protracted drug investigation that began in season one and continues into the third season.

With the Barksdale investigation concluded, the fourth season of THE WIRE will expand its focus to include a look at the role of the educational system in an urban environment.

The third season of THE WIRE generated wide critical praise. It was named the best series of 2004 by Entertainment Weekly, which called the show "the smartest, deepest and most resonant drama on TV." The New York Times observed that the series is "one of the smartest, most ambitious shows on television." TV Guide hailed THE WIRE as "smart and subtle, yet also brutally powerful," while New York Newsday declared THE WIRE "the greatest dramatic series ever produced for television," and Daily Variety called it "brilliant" and "meticulously written, superbly acted."

THE WIRE was created by David Simon; executive producers are David Simon and Nina Kostroff Noble, with co-executive producer, Joe Chappelle. Writers include Ed Burns and George Pelecanos.

Hello Kitty!

The Hello Kitty Buzz has returned...Actually, did it ever leave?

Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears have designed bowls for the Hello Kitty EBAY Auction much like Lindsay Lohan, Tori Spelling, and Alicia Silverstone have done in the recent past.

There is also a story out about a possessed Hello Kitty backpack in the new movie Dark Water. Anyway, the kitty is buzzworthy!

Playstation Portable

Sony released the Playstation Portable in the US at Midnight and gamers everywhere are snapping up the million plus PSP's that are in the marketplace. I haven't gotten one yet but I am psyched at the 24 titles that have been released with the PSP. There are games out there for everybody...Sports, Driving, Fighting, Quirky...

The 10 oz. weight and the 4.3" monitor make it so cool. Plus, the ability to watch movies and listen to music. Someone referred to it earlier today as Sony's Swiss Army Knife. Built in Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, and Flash Memory make it awesome.

Terry Schiavo ( A Human Yo-Yo)

The Terry Schiavo case has been ballied around constantly. I first heard about Terry on the Glenn Beck radio program, a couple of years ago.

Many, haven't followed the case too closely although they may have a working knowledge of the case. Here is a brief history...

According to some doctors, Terry suffered a heart attack in 1990 that caused massive brain damage. The heart attack left her in a PVS (Persistant Vegetative State). A medical malpractice suit was filed on Terry's behalf as the heart attack was caused by a misdiagnosed potassium deficiency. Other doctors say a bone scan reveals "multiple traumas".

Another related account is that Terry suffered from bulimia. The bulimia caused the heart attack. So, the cruel irony may be that Terry was starving herself and now the courts are trying to starve her.

There are issues involving her husband. He has a fiancee and reportedly two kids with this woman. He stands to receive what is left of the money from the malpractice suit. But, I understand there is not much left.

So, is he making decisions based upon what is best for him, her, us, or a combination of the above?

What do I think? I think it is time to remove the tubes and allow her to die. Her quality of life is nearly completely diminished. Her funds are nearly diminished. It has been 15 years, folks...Maybe I sound rude in my thoughts. I don't know.
